Non-dilutive money with a clock on it

LOI due Wed, Sept 2
Breakthrough T1D: combined CGM and pump devices
Foundation money aimed squarely at a device integration problem, and for-profit companies are explicitly eligible. Short letter of intent first, so the lift to get in front of it is small. Relevant to the diabetes tech cluster sitting between Cambridge and Route 128.

White papers due Fri, Oct 30
MTEC FY2026 Multi-Topic Request for Project Proposals
About $10.5M across topics, funded through a Department of Defense other-transaction vehicle. Two of the focus areas map cleanly onto New England strengths: blast and blunt exposure sensing (up to $7M per award) and musculoskeletal injury. Check the consortium membership requirement before you start writing.

Rolling · Massachusetts only
MeHI Digital Health Sandbox
Up to $60K to cover testing and validation fees at a Massachusetts partner site: hospitals, senior care, and simulation labs. No fixed deadline, which is exactly why it gets forgotten. You will need a signed letter of support from the sandbox host, so open that conversation before you apply.

Also on the radar: MassVentures START reopens February 1, 2027 for Massachusetts companies with a prior SBIR Phase II. The Mass Life Sciences Center Research Infrastructure fund is open August 17 to November 6, but applicants must be nonprofits, so the play there is getting your incubator or hospital partner to apply and writing them a letter of support.

Active medical braces for people with walking disorders, built on robotics and AI. Two products: DREEVEN, an AI-powered robotic knee orthosis that uses hydraulic actuation and real-time gait sensing to adapt support to how someone actually walks, and REEV SENSE, a connected sensor system that turns a clinician's phone into a gait analysis report in minutes.
|
Lead indication: chronic gait impairment after stroke · Status: pivotal study underway, supporting FDA clearance
Boston tie: study sites at Encompass Health (Braintree) and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital (Bradford), run out of Boston University
|
REEV's pivotal study of DREEVEN went live at the end of July, with Lou Awad of Boston University's Neuromotor Recovery Laboratory as principal investigator. It measures mobility during real functional tasks, flat and uneven ground, stairs, sit-to-stand, and pairs in-clinic sessions with home monitoring. The first finalized devices are assembled and ready for it, after four hardware iterations in two years.
The part worth studying is how DREEVEN reaches real patients. REEV has announced a product partnership with Janton, an Eqwal company, to bring powered custom KAFO orthoses to post-stroke patients. It took two years of joint work and patient validation to make motorized KAFOs ready for the real world. The takeaway for hardware founders: rather than building custom fabrication and fitting in-house, REEV paired up with a team that already had the craft.
“The idea is simple: pair their carbon fiber craftsmanship with DREEVEN’s motorization. We handle the intelligent robotic assistance, they handle the orthosis that fits perfectly.”
